Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, a uniformed member of a paid fire department or a uniformed member of a police department who is not a member of a retirement system under chapter 32 of the general laws shall be exempt from section 2 of chapter 415 of the acts of 1987 but shall not continue to serve past the age of 72.
This act shall not take effect until it has been adopted by a vote of the local legislative body. “Legislative body” shall mean, in the case of a city, the city council in accordance with its charter, and in the case of a town, the town meeting.
